(Digital Marketing Agency, thesnsgroup.com)- American
Video streaming service Netflix has recently announced its Cuban expansion,
just weeks after US President Barack Obama's edict to reopen diplomatic ties
between the two countries.
"We've said we intend for
Netflix to be a global service and, until now, Cuba is the only country in the
Western Hemisphere where we have been legally unable to operate according to
U.S. law," said Netflix spokeswoman Victoria Ferreira.
Nevertheless, there is one
remarkable problem with internet access as only roughly 26% of Cubans have some
access to the Internet, while that access is often slow and would be unable to
stream video.
"The important thing about
this is it's forward-looking," said William LeoGrande, an expert on Cuba
at American University.
"It's not going to
affect very many people immediately, but as Internet access on the island
improves, which is something the Cuban government is committed to and that
Obama's action makes easier, more and more people will be able to take
advantage. This is exactly the kind of development the president envisioned
when he made policy changes back in December."
